I. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by President Rick Alston at 6:30 pm in the Board Room of the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham. In attendance were Drs. Watt Cobb, Todd Rankin, Jeff Rickabaugh, John Christensen, Henry Zaytoun, Jr., Todd Fisher, Keith Sellers, Greg Richardson, and Ms. Sharon Hunt, SAO Executive Director.
Dr. Rick Alston welcomed Dr. Todd Rankin and Dr. Jeff Rickabaugh as new directors.
On motion, the Board unanimously accepted the minutes from the February 1, 2007 meeting.
II. FINANCIAL REPORT
Dr. Sellers reported that we currently have a First Citizens Bank checking balance of $36,650.06, and a Little Bank CD of $18,302.68.
During 2007, NCAO donated $2000.00 to the AAOF in memory of Dr. Robert Wentz, John Bottoms, James Legget, Jr., and William Ditto.
Dr. Bill Craig and Dr.Galen Quinn passed away in 2007, and a $2000 memoriam will be made to the AAOFin 2008.
The NCAO also donated $1000.00 for sponsorship of the NC Dental Society annual meeting in 2007.
III. PROGRAM CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Dr. Sellers reported that we have 151 registrations for the 2008 meeting. The 2009 meeting will be at the Imperial Palace Sheraton in Durham[Research Triangle Park] February 5, 6, and 7th with Dr. John Graham speaking.
IV SAO REPORT
Sharon Hunt, Executive Director, addressed issues concerning specialty care, and access to care. She also discussed the SAO meeting in Orlando on November 5-9, 2008, and encouraged everyone to attend. The SAO is also sending 5 members to Washington, DC for a Governmental Affairs meeting.
Dr. Henry Zaytoun, SAO Secretary/Treasurer, encouraged us to send one or two young members to the Leadership Development Class.
V OLD BUSINESS
- Directors and Officers Insurance Renewal has been paid by the AAO.
B. Peer Review Committee: Policy is to have 5 members appointed by the President
with 2 rotating off each year, or being reappointed.
- NCAO incorporation status has been confirmed by Dr. Henry Zaytoun.
- The NCAO web page (NCAO.org) will be monitored by the middle director
- Exhibitors have been approved at the state meeting to be chosen at the direction of the President.
VI AAO DELEGATE REPORT
Dr. Watt Cobb discussed issues being considered by the AAO and are included with his report.
VII NEW BUSINESS
Dr. Rick Alston outlined the following issues that came before him during 2007:
A. Orthodontists living in NC may attend the state meeting their first year as a guest, but then must join the NCAO to return.
B. Nine new members were admitted to the SAO in 2007 (213 active; 280 total)
C. Necrology report: Drs. Galen Quinn and Bill Craig. A $2000.00 donation to the AAOF will be made in their honor
D. Peer Review: No cases were brought to the Peer Review Committee
E. A letter was received from Mark Casey, director of the state Medicaid Commission, asking our help in enrolling orthodontists.
On motion (Sellers/Richardson) A sub-committee was formed to study the situation.
Dr. David Hall will serve as Chair.
F. Dr. Rick Alston will serve on the North Carolina Physician’s Advisory Group for one year-the position is to be appointed yearly by the Board
G. A form will be circulated at the meeting for members to sign up for the Key Contact Program to enhance contacts with the NC General Legislatureand members of the U.S. Congress.
H. Dr. Jeff Rickabaugh attended the SAO Leadership Development Program in 2007, and Dr. Ernest Goodson is attending in 2008.
I. Two NCAO Board members will be invited to attend the SAO Board meeting in November 2008.
J. The NCAO will help sponsor the NCDS annual meeting with a $1000.00 contribution.
K. Dr. John Graham will speak at the 2009 meeting to be held at the Sheraton Imperial.
