NCAO BUSINESS MEETING

SHERATON IMPERIAL HOTEL

FEBRUARY 2, 2007

 

Dr. Madeline Serrano convened the meeting at 4:30 pm in the auditorium of the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Research Triangle Park. She welcomed all the attendees and thanked the speakers, Charlene White and John McGill.

Presidents Report

The NCAO’s incorporation status with the Secretary of State needs to be updated. Dr. Henry Zaytoun, Jr., will update this with the NCAO’s official address as his main office.

Dr. Serrano reported the deaths of Dr. W. Robert Wentz, Dr. John Bottoms, Dr. James Leggett, Jr., and Dr. William M. Ditto. On motion (Zaytoun/Sellers) the Board unanimously voted to make a memorial gift in the amount of $2,000 in honor of all deceased members from the past year.

Dr. Serrano reported that 15 new members were admitted to the SAO from North Carolina in 2006.

Dr. Keith Sellers reported results from a survey of SAO Constituent Meeting regarding exhibitors at meetings. On motion (Zaytoun/Ball) the Board unanimously voted to allow sponsors at the NCAO meeting on a trial basis for 2008.

The possibility of moving the date for the "Give Kid’s a Smile" program or moving the NCAO meeting date was discussed. No action was taken on moving the NCAO meeting date in order to participate in the ADA "Give Kid’s a Smile" program.

The possibility of the NCAO appointing a committee to work with Social Services to facilitate greater access to orthodontic care for Medicaid-eligible children was discussed. No action was taken on appointing a committee to work with North Carolina Social Services to facilitate greater access to orthodontic care for Medicaid-eligible children.

On motion (Cobb/Ball) the Board unanimously voted to donate $15,000 to the W.R. Proffit Faculty Development Fund.

 

SAO President’s Report



Dr. David Williams encouraged all of us to attend the 2007 SAO meeting in Hollywood, Florida, October 31-November 4, 2007. Dr. Williams also gave a brief report highlighting results of Environmental Scanning from the 2006 SAO Executive Committee Meeting.

SAO Executive Director’s Report



Sharon Hunt, Executive Director of the SAO presented a power point presentation highlighting Association trends discussed at the Leadership Development Program, and the most important challenges orthodontics will face in the next 3-5 years.

Financial Report



Dr. Richardson reported that we currently have a First Citizens Bank checking account balance of $40,448.93 and a balance of $27,383.24 in our CD on deposit with Little Bank of Kinston, NC.

During the year, we donated $2,000 to the AAOF Memorial Gift (in memory of

Dr. Jack Silvers); $15,000 to the W.R. Proffit Faculty Development Fund ($9,000 from Little Bank CD / $6,000 from Dr. David Sarver) at the UNC School of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics; $1,000 Sponsorship of NC Dental Society Annual Session (2006); and $1,000 Sponsorship of NC Dental Society Annual Session (2007).



AAO Delegate Report



Dr. Watt Cobb presented the AAO Delegate Report. In summary, the 2005 House of Delegates considering resolutions concerning:

Pro Bono treatment for military families who have lost a parent in the line of duty.

Approval of a $2 million fund to be distributed by the AAO Faculty Development Award Committee to Orthodontic Programs in the US and Canada.

Approval of a two-year funding for the "More than a Smile" Public Awareness Campaign.

 

Elections

Dr. Ray Ball presented the following slate of nominations:

a. NCAO President: Dr. Richard Alston

b. NCAO Vice-President: Dr. Greg Richardson

c. NCAO Secretary-Treasurer: Dr. Keith Sellers

d. NCAO Senior Director: Dr. John Christensen

e. NCAO Middle Director: Dr. Todd Fischer   

f. NCAO Junior Director: On motion, the membership unanimously elected Dr. Tom Griffin.

On motion, the proposed slate of nominees was elected unanimously.

Dr. Alston presented Dr. Serrano with a President’s Plaque for her service to the NCAO.

Dr. Alston reminded all present that next year’s meeting will be at the Sheraton Imperial in Raleigh and will feature Dr. Michael McLaughlin.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 pm.
